01
Starting point
SmartWay has been active in electrical installations since 1991, and today designs, supervises, and executes smart and energy-efficient buildings. Online, the company was split across two addresses: smartway.com.hr with history, projects, and publications, and smartwaydesign.hr with professional content on design.
The second address was a separate application without a content management system, so every text or image change depended on an external contractor. Content was duplicated: five out of eight materials in the library were existing publications. All design services were listed on a single page, preventing any from ranking well individually on search engines.

What we built
-
One Site Instead of Two
A new WordPress theme custom-built for this project. Design, Supervision, and Execution each received their own page, and all old addresses were redirected to the new ones.
-
Project Portfolio
Projects with filters by building type and SmartWay's role, galleries, and related projects. Twelve public projects were migrated from the old site.
-
Resource Library
PDF materials are stored in a protected folder: a direct link returns an access denied message, and downloads go through login and rights verification, with download tracking.
-
Passwordless Login
The user enters their email and receives a six-digit code valid for ten minutes. The code is stored only as a hash, and the number of attempts and requests is limited.
-
Membership and HUB-3 Barcode
Orders send a proforma invoice with a reference number and a 2D barcode for mobile banking payment. After payment confirmation, membership is valid for 12 months, and renewal reminders are sent automatically.
-
Proprietary Newsletter
Instead of an external service: two lists for two brands, a campaign editor with mobile preview, double opt-in, one-click unsubscribe, and batch sending.
-
Legal Pages and Consents
Imprint, terms, privacy, and cookies, plus a consent add-on: external services like Google Maps only load after consent.

What it looks like
04
Technical decisions
-
Email Code Instead of Password
Materials are downloaded by people who visit a few times a year and don't remember passwords. The code is tied to the browser that requested it, preventing login to someone else's account via a forwarded link.
-
Proprietary PDF417 Encoder
The payment slip barcode is generated on the server according to HUB specifications, without additional libraries that could conflict with other plugins. A test decodes it with an independent library.
-
Newsletter within WordPress
Lists, subscribers, and campaigns are in custom tables. Sending occurs in batches of twenty messages under database lock, ensuring no one receives the same message twice.
-
Tests Before Every Publication
Automated tests in three browsers cover login, membership, newsletter, barcode, redirects, and accessibility. Each old address has its own redirect test.
-
2 KB Instead of 668 KB
The homepage animation was rewritten without a large 3D library. Approximately 11 KB of JavaScript remains on the page.

Where it stands today
The site is completed and undergoing final review at a test address before migrating to smartway.com.hr. The old smartwaydesign.hr address will then be permanently redirected to the new site.
